Myofascial Release
Overview
Like a nylon stocking around a balloon, muscles are surrounded by a thin, connective layer of tissue called fascia. In this way, myofascia is the complete body suit runing from the top of your head down to the bottoms of your feet. When fascia is restricted, natural muscle shape is comprimised, and problems begin.
Myofascial pain syndrome is a chronic pain disorder caused by sensitivity and tightness in myofascial tissues (referred to as “trigger points"). After a muscle heals from a tear, cut, or impact injury, surrounding fascia may remain restricted due to adhesions or lines of tension., thus preventing the muscle from returning to its natural state. Subtle at first, myofascial injuries become more pronounced over time as restrictions upset the natural balance of interconnected muscles, ligaments, and tendons. An injury to the shoulder, for example, may manifest as pain symptoms in the elbow or wrist. Treatment to either area therefore addresses a symptom, not the underlying cause.
Benefits
Myofascial release is a therapeutic technique used to correct restrictions, adhesions, and lines of tension in this connective tissue layer. Using gentle, targeted stretches on tight fascia, this technique allows both fascia and muscle to relax, thereby improving stretch capability and range of motion. By realigning fascia and the muscle to which it is connected, myofascial release helps reduce pain and return muscle flexibility to a more natural state.
Over time, the cumulative effects of trauma from falls, whiplash, surgery, or habitual poor posture all typically benefit from myofascial release. Patients with myofascial pain syndrome benefit from this approach as do those who suffer from chronic headaches. Both cranial sacral therapy and visceral manipulation tie in strongly with myofascial release. Releasing muscle restrictions and adhesions allows for the discharge recurring physical, and, when present, energetic and trauma-based pain.
Areas worked by the therapist may differ from where the pain originates or where it is felt most prominently. By working the broader network of muscles, it aims to reduce tension throughout the body by releasing trigger points across a broad section of the muscular system.
